EAPS 42 Structural Geology and Tectonics

The theory of plate tectonics is one of the most important contributions to the physical sciences. This course examines various aspects of plate tectonics through a combination of theoretical background and exposure to regional geologic processes and structures, or tectonics. Topics of examination include rock deformation mechanisms, stress/strain, major structures (e.g., faults, folds, etc…), the origin and evolution of mountain belts, the causes of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and regional tectonics of some area of interest. Students learn that tectonic analysis requires the synthesis of a wide range of information in an attempt to reconstruct the geologic architecture of a particular region. This course will involve single- and multi-day field excursions to gain critical field experience in structural geology and tectonics research. Graduate students enrolled in this course will have additional assignments, including individual/group presentations and projects.

Prerequisite

EAPS 40 and one of the following: EAPS 1, EAPS 2, EAPS 3, EAPS 4, EAPS 5, EAPS 6, EAPS 8, or EAPS 9; or Instructor Permission.
