EAPS 3 Elementary Oceanography
Oceanography is one of the studies in which natural processes are investigated with interdisciplinary approaches by scientists of a wide range of specialties. Physical, chemical, biological and geological processes in the oceans and their interactions are studied in this course. Students will gain appreciation of the complexity of the ocean as a natural system and necessity of interdisciplinary to investigate it. Oceans as a source of resources, as a fundamental part of the global climate engine, as a book of Earth's environmental history, and as a bed of the origin of life are discussed. We also introduce widely used technologies such as ship-based observations, biologging, and numerical modeling. Changing polar regions including the Arctic, Antarctic, and Greenland, use and abuse of ocean resources, and associated environmental problems are also discussed.
