ENGS 164 Medical Diagnostics and Monitoring

Diagnostics from all aspects of healthcare will be evaluated with an emphasis on standard benchmarks as well as cross-cutting healthcare areas in infectious diseases, oncology, cardiology, and neurology. Foundational principles cover concepts central to microbiology, chemistry, nucleic acid and imaging technologies as well as the importance of quality assurance and quality control and diagnostic performance measures. Other topics covered include the clinical trial system and FDA approval pathways for drugs and devices. Expert guest lecturers from Thayer, Geisel, The Dartmouth Institute, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and the White River Junction Veterans Administration Medical Center will present on specialized topic areas. Field trips. This course might appeal to students seeking to advance their knowledge of the medical devices field, including those in bioengineering, biotechnology, the applied sciences, and business-oriented students.

Prerequisite

ENGS 35 or equivalent.
