ENGS 161 Microbial Physiology and Metabolic Engineering

A consideration of cellular metabolism, with an emphasis on microbial metabolism, and its manipulation in order to produce products of interest. Quantitive descriptions of energy generation, cell growth, and biosynthesis will be addressed in the context of both unstructured and structured models. General principles of metabolic engineering, including metabolic control theory, will be presented and illustrated using case studies. Students will complete a substantial course project related to goal-directed analysis and manipulation of metabolism.
