ENVS 80.23 Soils and Society

Soils are ecological infrastructure and cultural archives that record relationships among land, climate, organisms, and societies. This experiential course introduces students to the social and scientific dimensions of soil through field observation, ethical soil sampling, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and public communication. Students will develop and conduct a small research project that follows soils from landscape observation to data analysis and storytelling. The course emphasizes outdoor learning, responsible research practices, and understanding soils as both ecological systems and social landscapes.
