New Undergraduate Course Supplement 2025

ENGS 85.17 Biophotonics: Principles and Applications in Biomedicine

This course explores the fundamental principles of light-matter interactions and their applications in biomedical science and medicine. Students will be able to describe the unique advantages of different optical technologies to assess tissue function and morphology and improve current disease diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring paradigms in the clinic. Specifically, students will learn about the theoretical foundations and practical implementation of optical spectroscopy and imaging techniques, with a focus on microscopy methods, optical coherence tomography, and photoacoustic imaging. The course integrates independent and team work, demonstrations, critical reviews of current literature, and student-led presentations to deepen understanding and foster skills in collaborative problem-solving and scientific communication. Application topics will be tailored to align with student interests, encouraging active engagement and exploration of cutting-edge advancements in biophotonics.

The Timetable of Class Meetings contains the most up-to-date information about a course. It includes not only the meeting time and instructor, but also its official distributive and/or world culture designation. This information supersedes any information you may see elsewhere, to include what may appear in this ORC/Catalog or on a department/program website. Note that course attributes may change term to term therefore those in effect are those (only) during the term in which you enroll in the course.
