FREN 45.04 What is the Contemporary?
This course will examine how recent novels, films, and critical texts engage with the cultural and political climate of post-1980 France. Subjects of inquiry will include: postmodernism, minimalism, “post-exoticism,” nationalism, biopolitics, “spectrality,” terrorism and violence, gender and class. Works may include novels by Houellebecq, Echenoz, Toussaint, Salvayre, Ernaux, Darrieussecq, Volodine, Michon; films by Carax, Assayas, Haneke; critical readings by Agamben, Derrida, Ruffel, Viart, Millet, Jameson.
