ENGS 14 Technology Entrepreneurship
The development and translation of novel technologies has transformed how we live, work, and solve critical societal challenges. Building, leading, funding, or operating within a technology-based venture demands an understanding of the distinctive opportunities and complexities these enterprises present. This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and issues of technology and technology entrepreneurship and the venture ecosystem within which many will pursue their professional lives. By engaging with the key questions that shape entrepreneurial paths, students will be better equipped to navigate their own life and career choices with awareness, purpose, and confidence—and to make more thoughtful, effective, and ethical contributions to the organizations and communities they choose to serve.
It is designed for undergraduate students from all majors, including science, engineering, and the humanities who seek to better understand the entrepreneurial mindset as applied to the commercialization of new technologies and its key processes and challenges. The topics addressed are introductory and relevant for those interested in founding new ventures, future employees of new ventures or corporate startups, and those interested in pursuing careers investing in such efforts.
Through case studies, readings, lectures, projects, and engagement with guest speakers, the course provides instruction and perspective on the processes entrepreneurs follow to start, resource, adapt, and grow technology-based ventures — while also helping students develop both their capabilities and a deeper understanding of their own interests in pursuing careers in the field.
Not open to students who have received credit for ENGS 15.06.
