UNSG 150 Digital Storytelling Lad

The Digital Storytelling Lab is a hands-on, experiential course that integrates research, scholarship, communication, and digital storytelling tools. Designed for graduate students and postdocs across disciplines—including STEM students—the course explores using digital media to communicate complex ideas in engaging, accessible, and impactful ways to a variety of audiences.

Students build skills through project-based learning and hands-on practice. Topics covered include website creation, podcasting, writing, visual storytelling, zine making, storyboarding, and collaborative video production. Alongside foundational discussion—which includes basic design and storytelling theory as well as emerging creative technologies—the course prioritizes iterative processes in which students experiment, revise, and refine their work while exploring how choices of format, platform, medium, narrative, structure, and tone influence audience engagement and the effective communication of their research.

The course emphasizes collaboration, experimentation, in-classroom workshopping, constructive feedback, discovery, and practical outcomes that support students' academic work, research communication, and future careers. Students from all disciplines are welcome. No previous media or storytelling experience is required.
