PH 243 Equity in Public Health

PH 243 builds upon the foundation set by PH205, permitting exploration of concepts,
frameworks, strategies and tools to address inequities and promote equity in public health and
healthcare. The 3-week sequence will develop knowledge and skills in the two relevant domains of the
2021 Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals: Health Equity Skills and Community
Partnership Skills. Major themes to be covered include: determinants of health and our opportunity
to be healthy; linking conditions of power to health and the importance of engaging community; and
concrete strategies and intentional approaches for promoting equity. At the end of this course,
students will be able to: apply theoretical frameworks to explain structural processes that lead to
health inequities; identify, and work to address, systemic and structural barriers/drivers that create or
perpetuate health inequities; engage in continuous self-reflection about one’s own biases, attitudes,
behaviors, skills and knowledge; describe the importance of sharing power and ownership with
community members and the people most affected by our policies, practices, programs and services;
and, design and implement organizational policies, practices, programs, and services that advance
health equity.
