PHIL 80.31 Feminist Aesthetics
This seminar addresses questions at the intersection of feminism, aesthetics, and philosophy of art. What (if anything) counts as specifically feminist aesthetics? To what extent and in what ways have women been excluded from making art? Are there particularly ‘feminine’ ways of making art? What is the ‘feminine’ gaze? We will read, watch, and discuss various media that raise feminist issues such as: gendered violence, marriage, divorce, the family, sexuality, colonial and postcolonial gender-based resistance, and questions about race, class, indigeneity, disability, and their intersections with gender.
This advanced seminar is designed to be a culminating experience for majors in Philosophy, although properly qualified students in other disciplines may also be admitted.
