LING 11.28 Gothic, Germanic, and Indo-European
The ancient Gothic language, recorded in written documents over 1500 years ago, is the oldest well-attested member of the Germanic language family, which is itself a branch of the much larger Indo-European family. In this class, students will study the phonology and grammar of Gothic both synchronically, as a language of interest in its own right, and diachronically, as a language crucial for work in Germanic and Indo-European historical-comparative linguistics.
