New Undergraduate Course Supplement 2025

ENGL 53.58 Reading Romantasy

In this course we’ll read romantasy by authors of color, explore romantasy and fantasy fan culture, and interpret popular criticism of the genre. Sitting at the intersection of genre romance and fantasy, romantasy is a literary genre that took off in 2020. It has been a juggernaut in the publishing industry. Romantasy refers to love stories set in fantasy worlds alongside or integrated within fantasy plots. It’s also often a form in which two or more people fall in love while they organize resistance to oppression, deliver justice, and usher in new political futures. In this course we will be doing literary and cultural studies along with ethnographic readings. We discuss questions about adaptation, film, television, and social media.
