ENGL 51.06 Shakespeare for Page and Stage
Co-taught by faculty from the English and Theater departments, this course offers a practical introduction to the work of William Shakespeare in which equal emphasis will be placed on the skills of textual analysis and the craft of acting. In a careful study of three plays, students will reconsider the textual history of Shakespeare’s scripts, from their early modern origins in tattered quartos and elaborate folios to the modernized and heavily edited texts we encounter and still adapt today. Preparatory close readings will guide our exploration of the actor’s craft of embodying Shakespeare’s characters in performance. The class will seek to demonstrate why scholars, readers, actors, and theater-makers alike have been drawn to Shakespeare’s work for over four hundred years. Prior acting experience is not necessary.
