EEER 38.01 Horror, Laughter, Fear, Rage: Emotions in Literature and Culture
This course explores how literature depicts and evokes emotion, moving readers to laughter, sadness, fear, empathy, anger, and more. Focusing on Russian short stories by Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Gogol, Chekhov, Kharms, Bulgakov, Shalamov, and other writers, we will analyze the literary and cognitive mechanisms that shape emotional experience. Readings in literary theory and psychology will provide critical frameworks. Students will also complete brief creative assignments to experiment with evoking emotion through language.
