BIOL 4 The Evolution of Cancer

In this course, intended for the non-science major, students explore the evolution of cancer from two complementary tracks. The first track focuses on how, starting from a single cell, cancer cells gradually come to resemble their unicellular ancestors by circumventing constraints on their reproduction, often resulting in the demise of the very ecosystem they require for their own existence. The second track follows the evolution of our understanding of this “emperor of all maladies” and explores how these molecular and evolutionary insights have led to longer and richer lives for the millions of people engaged in this ongoing battle of survival and reproduction.
