ARTH 48.09 A Wider Lens: Photo Histories 1950 to Present
This course examines various modes, trends, and methods that have shaped photography since 1950 (admittedly from an American/Western perspective). The course is arranged around key themes and concepts, including feminism, environmentalism, queer photography, world markets, street and news photography, and conceptual photography on history. The course will include weekly visits to the museum to view artworks in the Hood Museum’s collection that exemplify and elucidate the topic areas that are being taught. Through lectures, class discussions, virtual artists visits, and the viewing of artworks we will explore photography as an art form, a source of knowledge and knowledge making, and how artists approach lens-based production in their practice.
