REL 19.03 Rethinking the Divine

While the stories of mythology were the heritage of all Greeks and Romans, some found that the myths of the gods did not express their conception of a divine being. Philosophers as early as the 6th century B.C.E. offered views on such basic questions as whether any gods exist, whether a divine power created the world, whether any god intervenes in the events of history, and how a thinking person will want to interact with the beliefs and practices of his/her own culture. Readings will include texts by Plato, Epicurus, Cicero, Plutarch, and others.
