GOVT 83.35 Inequality and U.S. Social Welfare Policy

The 2025 government shutdown exposed major US policy challenges. Policy areas like food assistance, housing, and education were paused, affecting millions of American households. This phenomenon highlighted an ongoing debate about the critical governmental processes that impact anti-poverty efforts. Ingrained in these notions are the racial, institutional, and complex decentralized arrangements that accompany anti-poverty policies. This course will give students a broad overview of these social welfare policies, their potential to be structured by state and local government, and their unique place in the social and political environment.
