HIST 71.02 Law, Order, and Conquest in Islamic History

Starting in the seventh century, the Islamic Conquests monumentally changed the course of world history. But what did these conquests consist of? What was the international (“interpolitical”) framework in which they occurred, and what took place during them? What were the consequences for conquered populations and lands? And finally, how did post-conquest societies gradually transform into Islamic ones? In this class, we will chart these processes, beginning in pre-Islamic late antique Arabia and ending in the early modern Ottoman Empire, paying particular attention to the role that law played in the conquests, and to the role that it played after the conquests ended.
