New Undergraduate Course Supplement 2025

CRWT 40.23 Go Long: The Art and Craft of Longform Creative Nonfiction

How do writers of creative nonfiction develop questions, ideas and experiences into longform essays? In this intensive exploration, we’ll study, discuss and practice the craft and art of longform creative nonfiction. Our readings will survey a genre enjoying an extended “golden age,” including the New Journalism and the flourishing of longform creative nonfiction on digital media. We’ll read practitioners’ essays about the techniques and ethics of narrative nonfiction, subjective journalism and revelatory research. Writers and editors will join us in the classroom to discuss process, craft and publication. As writers, we’ll learn to recognize topics that can sustain extended exposition and narrative. We’ll develop our strongest ideas into proposals guiding us from inspiration to the completion of two longform essays.
