New Undergraduate Course Supplement 2025

COLT 19.08 Social Justice in Translation

“World Literature” refers to a canon of national classics and literary masterpieces circulated worldwide through translation. However, the concept does not reflect the diversifying societies, cultures, communities, and narratives in multiple languages of the globalized world. In this course, we will question the Western notion of “World Literature” and explore what is lost in and can be regained, reclaimed, and revisioned through translation and retranslation to do social justice to the diverse literatures of the world.

This information supersedes any information you may see elsewhere, to include what may appear in this ORC/Catalog or on a department/program website. Note that course attributes may change term to term therefore those in effect are those (only) during the term in which you enroll in the course.
