CLST 11.21 From Persia To Rome: Ethnicity in Ancient Empires
Ancient empires controlled vast lands with diverse peoples for centuries at a time. How did they accomplish this? What was it like to be ruled by these empires? Did empire shape people’s identity or the other way around? In this course we will explore ideas of identity, especially ethnicity and ancestry, and how they worked in four diverse ancient empires: The Achaemenid (Persian) empire, the Hellenistic (Greek) Seleucid and Ptolemaic empires, and the Roman empire.
