New Undergraduate Course Supplement 2025

ANTH 50.64 Alpha Males and Lonely Boys: Apes and the Behavioral Biology of Men

Through a comparative lens on our ape relatives, this course explores the evolutionary roots of male behavior and investigates modern stories on biology and masculinity. Did men evolve to be good dads? Is testosterone declining and does it matter? Do chimpanzees have toxic masculinity? In addition to scientific literature, texts include journalistic and popular media such as podcasts. In this course, students will consider what evolution has – and has not – contributed to what it means to be a man.
