ANTH 50.58 Anthropology of Rural Places and People
This course examines the shifting social, political, and cultural landscapes of rural America. Drawing on case studies that illuminate key patterns and processes, we trace the global and local dynamics shaping experiences and understanding of rurality. We engage critically with social scientific, literary, and public media texts to explore cultural narratives and representations of rural places and people. Using the lens of cultural anthropology, we examine the changing terrain of rural lives, with particular attention to healthcare, housing, economic development, and political engagement. The role of anthropology and ethnographic methods in understanding rural experiences will be explored as part of this course. This class includes engagement with a range of guests, study of historical and contemporary literature, art, music and public media drawn from a range of rural settings.
