COLT 19.09 Introduction to Literary Translation
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the art and craft of literary translation. The practice of translation is not only an apprenticeship in intensive close reading but also in the development of literary style and voice. In this course, we will explore the delights and challenges of translation—the dangers of literalism and false cognates, the creativity required to render nuances of tone and register as well as allusions, and the hurdles presented by linguistic play and stylistic innovation—and we will develop tools necessary to meet them.
