PH 243 The Psychology of Public Health Impact

This course explores psychological mechanisms that underpin effective advocacy work in public health. This course is a longitudinal experience that will span the entire second year of the Hybrid MPH curriculum. Students will read an ethnography examining 5 rural New England families whose lives were destabilized by the shortcomings of their local healthcare systems. This ethnographic text will be analyzed with particular attention to learning how to attune to narratives of suffering with an operational lens. Focused skill sessions will be held throughout the year to augment students’ abilities to listen for nuance and augment advocacy impact using creative reading practices.
