Minor in Neuroscience

The Minor in Neuroscience is sponsored by the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. It is intended to provide formal recognition for students who have concentrated some of their academic work in the interdisciplinary area of Neuroscience. The minor requires six courses: one prerequisite, two required courses, and three electives. Many of the courses may require permission of the instructor in addition to prerequisite courses.

Prerequisites (Choose 1 course):

PSYC 6Introduction to Neuroscience

Core courses: (Choose 2 courses)

PSYC 45Behavioral Neuroscience

PSYC 46/BIOL 49Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience

PSYC 65Systems Neuroscience with Laboratory

BIOL 12Cell Structure and Function

PSYC 46 or BIOL 12 may be taken for core course credit, but not both.

Core courses cannot be taken as NRO.

Elective courses: (Choose 3 courses)

In addition to the courses listed below, other approved elective courses for the Neuroscience minor are published to the PBS website at the start of the academic year,  This list includes several PSYC 50s and PSYC 80s level courses, as well as courses in other departments.

One of the three electives must be at the 50s level or higher.

PSYC 45 and PSYC 46 can only be taken as a elective courses if not taken as core courses.

Required and elective courses cannot count toward both the major and minor.

Elective courses cannot be taken as an NRO.

With permission of the Neuroscience Steering Committee, other courses that are appropriate given the student's area of specialization may be taken for elective credit.
