MUS 43 From Beethoven to Now (Modern Classical Music)
This course introduces the composers, repertoires, and cultures of Western music from ca. 1800 to the present. We consider how political revolutions in Europe and the Americas created globalizing forces that destabilized the very definability of Westernness (and of music) over these past two centuries. Among the many composers we will study are Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Crawford, Cage, Ligeti, Oliveros, Lachenmann, Reich, Eastman, Adès, Miranda, and Sasaki.
